Focus on early-career researchers: Launch of the PostDoc Association
The PostDoc Association (PDA) at the Medical University of Graz has successfully held its kick-off meeting. With over 100 participants and thought-provoking presentations, the event and initiative represent a significant step forward in supporting early-career researchers at the Medical University of Graz. The event focused on highlighting the importance of reliable working conditions for young researchers and actively helping to shape them. It is also important to consolidate sustainable career prospects for researchers after they have completed their PhDs. In his opening remarks, Vice-Rector Akos Heinemann emphasised the strategic relevance of this qualification phase for the institution’s scientific excellence and reaffirmed that the consistent support of postdoctoral researchers is a key priority in the university’s future planning. During the event, the PDA presented its objectives and the first working groups. A key focus here is also on creating a network.
The various contributions to the programme shed light on the complex demands of the postdoc phase from different perspectives: Yasmin Dolak-Struss highlighted strategies for the skills development of young researchers, whilst Med Uni Graz researcher Senka Holzer provided an insight into her career as a researcher, emphasising in particular the importance of personal consistency and professional networking. Johanna Stadlbauer presented the University of Graz Career Centre and highlighted the importance of established university structures.
The PDA intends to expand its services, particularly in the areas of mentoring and career development for young researchers, and to intensify exchange among postdoctoral researchers through regular activities. All postdoctoral researchers at the Medical University of Graz can actively contribute to the development of the PDA, for example by participating in the regular meetings of the General Assembly or by getting involved in a working group.
