In March, a delegation from Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) visited Med Uni Graz: Rima Beriashvili (project manager, head of the Department of Pathology), Manana Jikurashvili (pathologist) and Zviad Gabisonia (Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia and expert on legal and ethical issues relating to AI) were guests of the Information Science and Machine Learning research group led by Heimo Müller, Markus Plass and Gernot Fiala at the Diagnostic and Research Institute of Pathology, which carries out projects in the field of digital pathology. Following the reception and tour of the Diagnostic and Research Institute of Pathology, the group visited the Biobank Graz. A highlight of the visit was the discussion with the Vice Rector of Studies and Teaching, Erwin Petek, and Heidrun Mörtl, who represented the international aspects.

In the afternoon, the programme featured a 3D demonstration with a Q&A session in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre with Herwig Rehatschek from the Department of Medical Education.

In terms of content, cooperation in digital pathology, medical didactics and innovative teaching formats was explored in greater depth, and the legal and ethical framework for the use of AI – including data protection and international harmonisation – was discussed. In addition to the projects rooted in pathology, further discussions on the topic of digitalisation were agreed upon, in which stakeholders from the Medical University of Graz will be involved.
