29 September is World Heart Day: on this day of action, the fist-sized organ takes centre stage. The heart’s pumping capacity is impressive: up to 100,000 beats a day ensure that around 10,000 litres of blood are pumped through our blood vessels. Without this daily feat of strength, the body’s organs and tissues would be unable to carry out their vital functions. That is why it is so important for healthy aging that the heart’s performance remains high even in old age. Scientists at the Medical University of Graz are constantly conducting research to understand the processes of cardiac ageing, to unravel the causes and consequences of heart failure, and to get to the bottom of the many other mysteries and puzzles that the heart still holds.

The latest updates on heart research and beyond can be found in the news section of the ‘Metabolism & Circulation’ research field. In addition, the latest issue of our magazine MEDitio focuses on heart research and healthy ageing of the heart. Read it now!
