On 25 September, the spotlight around the world is on the work of those who make research possible behind the scenes: research managers and research administrators. At the Medical University of Graz, too, International Research Administrator Day was taken as an opportunity to highlight their important role.

From the initial idea to the successful completion of a research project, numerous organisational and administrative steps are required. Research managers support researchers in identifying suitable funding opportunities and preparing applications, plan budgets and resources, and coordinate national and international project partnerships.

They also serve as key points of contact throughout the duration of a project: they keep track of deadlines and requirements, identify potential challenges and help to resolve them. Furthermore, they provide guidance on contractual, intellectual property and compliance issues and act as intermediaries between researchers, the administration and external partners.

Research needs freedom and, at the same time, structures that enable this freedom

The work of research managers creates precisely this connection: it relieves researchers of organisational tasks and helps ensure that research ideas can be turned into successful projects.

International Research Administrator Day therefore draws attention to a professional group whose contribution to science is often little recognised, yet which plays a vital role in the success of research projects. To mark this day, various individuals who support research gathered on the campus of the Medical University of Graz to discuss the field and provide insights into the diverse tasks involved in research management.
