AN EVENT IN THE ‘MEDICINE & SOCIETY’ SERIES ORGANISED BY MED UNI GRAZ
Artificial intelligence is already transforming medicine today: diagnostics, image analysis, synthetic biology and clinical decision-making processes are evolving at an enormous pace. Yet the more powerful technology becomes, the more important another question becomes: what role do humans play in a medical landscape where machines know more and more?
Doctors have to make decisions every day in the face of uncertainty – often without any perfect options. This is precisely why the ability to cope with ambivalence is becoming a crucial skill for the future: the ability to tolerate contradictions whilst still acting responsibly. The crucial question for the future is therefore not: ‘What can AI do in medicine?’, but rather: ‘Which human skills will become more important than ever as a result?’ The future of medicine is not programmed – it is decided by people.
